Last week, Mrs. Whitener attended a series of events in Augusta as a result of her being honored as one of the 10 teachers of the year nominees from across the state. Mrs. Whitener has been the music teacher here for generations of Tremont students. In addition to her full-time teaching responsibilities she is very active in music across  the area. For example, she is also a Horn Instructor at the University of Maine and  plays in the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. Debbie Helmke, parent of 8th grader Henry Helmke, nominated her for this honor.

As part of the events in Augusta, Mrs. Whitener had an exhibit on display in the Capitol Building in the Hall of Flags. Within this display she had a video of students performing: singing and playing in the various groupings that are part of her music program here at school. Additionally, all nominees received a certificate; meet with the Commissioner of Education and the Governor.

The next step in the process was the selection of six teachers to be semi-finalists and proceed through a rigorous review process leading to the final selection. Mrs. Whitener was informed that she has not been selected as a semi-finalist. We extend our congratulations to Mrs. Whitener for the fine work and dedication that she brings on a daily basis to our students here at Tremont.
