Laying Waste to the Elephant in the Living Room: Solutions for the Anxious Gifted Child

Anxiety is the most common mental health problem experienced by children. When left untreated, it causes anxiety-based disorders ranging from simple adjustment disorders to more debilitating maladies such as panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The relationship between anxiety and giftedness is largely unexplored in the literature and often overlooked or misconstrued in clinical practice, with potentially disastrous results. Truly insidious, with bona fide indicators eluding easy diagnosis, especially for the gifted, anxiety-based disorders are the “elephant in the living room”: a malady that eludes easy diagnosis, masked entirely or eclipsed by more obvious signs of distress such as perfectionism, underachievement, hyper-vigilance and depression. This interactive presentation provides parents, educators and mental-health professionals with information about the etiology of and powerful strategies for combating anxiety-based disorders.

This 3-part SENGinar features contributing authors from the popular book Living with Intensity: Understanding the Sensitivity, Excitability, and Emotional Development of Gifted Children, Adolescents, and Adults. The book provides a solid foundation in Dabrowski’s theory to gifted education as it relates to giftedness, then proceeds to provide a lifespan progression. It also offers strategies for enhancing the emotional development of gifted individuals.
Part 1 will present an overview of (1) the five forms of overexcitabilites and (2) their relationship to the concept of developmental potential that serve as the cornerstones of Dabrowski’s work. By participating in this webinar, you will: Understand and explain the core concepts of Dabrowski’s theory, Employ your skills and background to assess overexcitabilities in gifted youth, Apply these concepts to your work with gifted youth, emphasizing the strengths associated with overexcitabilities and their relationship to developmental potential in these clients.
Part 2: Gifted children’s heightened sensitivities and intensities combine to provide qualitatively different interactions both in their inner and outer worlds. The asynchronous gifted children need the guidance of adults to help them develop and foser their social, emotional and spiritual nature. By participating in this webinar you will: Identify strategies for nurturing the inner life, Understand the developmental experiences of gifted youngsters, Provide support for adults who help to guide these children.
Part 3: Incorporating a holistic and developmental perspective, this webinar will focus on innate traits of gifted children and adolescents, including overexcitabilities, sensitivity, perfectionism, and asynchronous development. By participating in this webinar, you will: Understand gifted individuals “from the inside out”, Identify the common misunderstandings and misconceptions of parents, teachers and counselors, Know how to nurture gifted children’s health and well-being.
